Walmart is mandating that all their suppliers provide products with these chips by the end of 2004 to help them track inventory. Unfortunately, where Walmart leads, others soon follow... Privacy issue groups are all over this, because who's to say that the chips will be removed (or deactivated, I suppose) once you leave the store, hmmm? It's not a gps unit that I know of. The gps units they have for criminals are as big as lunch boxes. It'll happen soon and it will have a remote that you can use to make your lost keys beep - that is available thru sharper image I believe. But with a wallet, suitcase or pocketbook, if just pressing your talisman could not only summon the police but could set off an alarm in the stolen chip containing item think what a deterrenttht migth be - try getting off a train or crowded vaporetto platform with something buzzing or ringing in your hand. We should work on this!
